13.1.3.1 Time Period for Telephone Calls – General Rule

Telephone calls to a prospect [or the prospect’s relatives or legal guardian(s)] may not be made prior to July 1 following the completion of the prospect’s junior year in high school; thereafter, staff members shall not make such telephone calls more than once per week.

 

13.1.3.1.1 Football Exception

One call may be placed during the month of May of the prospect’s junior year in high school. Additional calls may not be made prior to September 1 of the beginning of the prospect’s senior year in high school; thereafter, such telephone contact is limited to once per week outside of a contact period.

 

13.1.3.1.2 Men’s Basketball Exception

One telephone call per month to a prospect [or the prospect’s parents or legal guardian(s)] on or after June 15 of the prospect’s sophomore year in high school through July 31 of the prospect’s junior year in high school. An institution is permitted to make two telephone calls per week to a prospect [or the prospect’s parents or legal guardian(s)] beginning August 1 prior to the prospect’s senior year in high school. An institution is permitted to make one telephone call per week to a two-year college prospect [or the prospect’s parents or legal guardian(s)].

 

13.1.3.1.3 Women’s Basketball Exception

One telephone call to a prospect [or the prospect’s relatives or legal guardian(s)] may be made during each of the months of April and May of the prospect’s junior year in high school. One call may be made on or after June 1 through June 20 and one call may be made on or after June 21 through June 30 of the prospect’s junior year in high school. In addition, only three telephone calls to a prospect [or the prospect’s parents or legal guardian(s)] may be made during the month of July following the prospect’s junior year in high school, with no more than one telephone call per week; thereafter, staff members shall not make such telephone calls more than once per week. An institution may not have any additional communication with the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of a prospective student-athlete who also serves on the staff of their daughter’s nonscholastic team. It is permissible for an institution to contact a parent/legal guardian of a prospective student-athlete who also serves as a head coach of his or her daughter’s scholastic team.

 

13.1.3.1.3.1 Women’s Basketball – Additional Restriction – July Evaluation Periods.

During the July evaluation periods, all communication with a prospect, the prospect’s relatives or legal guardians, the prospect’s coach or any individual associated with the prospect as a result of the prospect’s participation in basketball, directly or indirectly, is prohibited.

 

13.1.3.2.2 Telephone Calls Initiated by Prospect at Prospect’s Expense

Institutional staff members may receive telephone calls placed by a prospect at the prospect’s own expense at any time, including prior to July 1 (September 1 in football) following the prospect’s junior year in high school.

NOTE: When taking messages, get the callers full name and year in school. If it is not after July 1 (September 1 in football) following the completion of the prospect’s junior year, notify the caller that NCAA rules prohibit a coach from returning the call.

 

13.1.3.6 Collect and Toll Free Telephone Calls

Institutional staff members may accept collect telephone calls placed by prospects, provided the calls are placed not earlier than July 1 following completion of the prospect’s junior year in high school. The institution may utilize a toll free (1-800) number to receive telephone calls by prospective student-athletes, prospects’ parents or legal guardian(s).

 

13.1.3.3.1 Men’s Basketball Exception

Institutional staff members may accept collect telephone calls placed by prospects, provided the calls are placed not earlier than the conclusion of the prospect’s sophomore year in high school. The institution may use a toll-free number to receive such calls from prospective student-athletes, prospect’s parents or legal guardian(s).

As a reminder, student-athletes may receive medical treatment and attend academic appointments on a required day off. These activities do not count toward daily or weekly hour limits (CARA).

Reminder: Student-athletes may not receive payment from any source for his/her complimentary admissions and may not exchange or assign them for any item of value. Also, family members and friends who have been assigned tickets may not sell or exchange them either!

With the NFL season kicking off this week, remember that all sports wagering activities are prohibited for all student-athletes and UGA Athletics Staff. This includes fantasy football, survivor pools, etc.
